More Details About Plans For The Merton Meadow Car Park

Herefordshire Council have released more details about their plans for the Merton Meadow car park which is situated right next to Hereford FC's Edgar Street stadium.

This from the Council:

Businesses on the site of the future City Link Road will begin to receive General Vesting Declarations (GVDs) from next week. The GVDs are the next step in the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) process and signal the transfer of land ownership to Herefordshire Council.

It marks the point at which the Council can take possession of the purchased land.
The council has worked closely with businesses in the area over the last two years to ensure that support is given to assist with moving to suitable locations if possible. The council will continue to support businesses through the last stage of the process to enable timely entry into the land needed for the road for demolition works to commence.

Geoff Hughes, director for economy, communities and corporate said “The construction of the road is vital to the continued regeneration of the Edgar Street Grid site. The road will unlock development land which will allow the construction of 800 much needed new homes.

The road will also have the added benefit of alleviating some of the traffic from Commercial Road and Blueschool Street. The construction of the road is part of a larger plan to refurbish the area with improvements planned for Commercial Road and Blueschool Street once the road is opened.”

Demolition work is due to start next month and hoardings around demolition sites will be visible in coming weeks.

Once demolition begins an element of the overflow area of Merton Meadow Car Park will need to be cordoned off for the storage of plant and materials. However, occupancy counts of other city car parks show that there is enough spare parking availability for the vehicles displaced from this area of the car park.

Construction of the road will begin in Autumn 2015 after demolition is complete and the construction of the road is expected to be finished in around 18 months.
